It’s time to get your whites right!

From whites to off-whites, ivories to ashen, we can find the perfect white for your space.

We have a wonderful white selection of wall paint and eggshell to get your started, with an extensive and beautiful range of neutral shades to choose from: rose tinted, yellow based to those with grey and green undertones. Top tip- it is useful to pick a white with an undertone that suits the rest of the colours in the room!

Edward believes that the best-off whites are tinted with earth pigments: yellow ochre, red ochre, raw umber and a little black – these will have warmth and a bit of hue, ranging from yellow to red through green and grey. What works best is determined by ’uncoloured’ elements in the room like stone or wood and what weight of colour the room calls for. Some off whites look too bright against deep colours or old furnishings and others can look too muddy for a modern and airy aesthetic.

One of the most commonly fussed over colours is the humble white and if you are new to painting or have a renovation on your hands, you will probably know that when choosing a shade of white for your room or ceiling, it’s no mean feat and there can be a lot of back and forth and it can quite frankly leave you feeling a little lost.

If you are looking to paint panelling, then Milk White won’t let you down, Edward’s favourite white to use and it seems fitting he is ‘enveloped’ in it for his own home office pictured below. Milk White also makes for a great bathroom colour, as well as Fine White with its subtle magnolia undertones – a take on a classic!

Ceilings

Ceilings are a whole other story, often referred to as the ‘fifth wall’. You’ll want to go a little warmer for this or risk getting a very cold looking room, Spanish White is head colour consultant Emma Bulmer’s go-to ceiling white and equally you could opt for Jonquil 20% with its subtle pink undercurrent.

A Spanish White ceiling with walls in Cinnamon 60%, interior design by Mimi Montagu

Recently I bought a house for the first time and wanted to re decorate before I moved in. My priority was to find non toxic paints, and also to find colours that I felt happy with. At first I was not sure I would find both. After much research I chose Edward Bulmer paints. They are both completely and transparently non toxic, and beautiful pigments. I chose milk white and they are  the most happy peaceful beautiful tones. I absolutely love the results in my house, and the paints look and feel amazing. Also the whole team at the Chelsea Edward Bulmer store were soo helpful,  patient, and helped guide me with colours, and every order came promptly. I would only use Edward Bulmer paints in the future. I cannot recommend them more highly!

Stone White

Stone White is the  darkest of the white shades at Edward Bulmer Natural Paint, this colour stands the test of time and can hold its own in any space. Stone is one of the planets oldest materials and one that is more precious than meets the eye. Pairing nicely with darker shades and a great option if you love neutral colours but want some added character, perfect on walls!

Pearl Colour

The iridescence of a pearl is hard to capture without seeming somewhat shiny. Pearl Colour contains a mix of 4 pigments to give it depth, is perfect used in a sunlit space and looks beautiful on alcove, exuding radiance. This well rounded white is un mistakenly striking and  matches well with lighter woodwork.

Pearl Colour and Silver White

Rose Tinted White

One of Edward’s most popular, this blushing white brings softness and warmth to a space with the smallest hint of reddy/pink and has in the past been described as ‘more of a mood than a colour’. Order a sample pot from our showroom and be the judge for yourselves, favourite for decorating bedrooms!

Fine White

Often compared to a ‘not quite magnolia’ this is a luxurious white and is well paired with greyish undertones to avoid coldness in any room, this is a popular colour in bathrooms. Fine white is creamy without having the starkness of a pure or plain white.

Spanish White

Whilst it may be an incredibly popular white for that ‘fifth’ wall – ceiling, this white wonder also conjures up daydreams to the Mediterranean, Spanish white resembles whitewashed stone of old buildings in sleepy Spanish towns. A mix of a bright white with a hint of yellow and ochre to create an uplifting hallway when mixed with other earthy tones.

How much paint do I need?

We have created this calculator to help you estimate the amount of paint you will need for your project. Please note that this is only an estimate, based on normal surfaces with two coats of paint.

Please check our practical painting advice - if you are painting onto a very absorbent surface, you may need more paint, and for best results, you may need to prime your surfaces.

If you end up with any leftover paint, get inspired with ways to use any excess paint - it's even compostable!

What are you painting?
