Honest Ingredients

We believe you should know what’s in the paint you bring into your home. That’s why we declare every ingredient on our tins, from our plant-based binder to the earth and mineral pigments that give our colours their distinctive character. What’s in our tins is on our tins.

Nothing to Hide

Every Ingredient, Declared

Transparency is fundamental to the way we make paint. Rather than hiding behind broad descriptions, we tell you what goes into our formulations so you can make an informed choice about the paint you use in your home.

Our paints are made with a pioneering plant-based binder and coloured using carefully selected earth and mineral pigments.

Natural Emulsion

Water

The primary diluent for most natural paints – and ours is no exception. Water makes up nearly 80% of our emulsion, helping it apply smoothly and dry evenly.

Sourced: Harz Mountains, Germany

Castor Oil

Extracted from the seeds of the subtropical castor oil plant (Ricinus communis), then boiled to create a natural drying oil, also known as Turkey Red Oil. It enhances durability and flow.

Cellulose

A natural starch derived from wood pulp from sustainably managed European forests. Used as a thickener and emulsifier in our natural paints.

Sourced: Europe

Chalk

A soft, white mineral (calcium carbonate) ground to a fine powder and added as a natural filler to improve opacity and texture.

Sourced: Germany

Clays

Naturally occurring minerals formed from the weathering of rocks rich in aluminium and silica. We use china clay (kaolin) and bentonite to thicken our paints and help pigments stay evenly suspended.

Sourced: Germany

Replebin®

Our exclusive biogenic binder — made from plant alcohol esters and organic acids. Replebin makes our natural paints durable and easy to apply, while retaining highly vapour permeable (breathable) properties. It’s a legally protected innovation and only available from our manufacturer, AURO.

Sourced: Germany

Silicates

Mineral-based fillers like mica, clay, and quartz (silicon dioxide) that add body to the paint and strengthen the finish. Also help keep pigments in suspension.

Sourced: Germany

Sodium Pyrithione

An organic compound containing sulphur and nitrogen, used as a mild preservative to extend the shelf life of our paints. Commonly used in cosmetics, cleaning products and paint.

Sourced: Europe

Surfactants

These important ingredients keep oils in suspension and improve the workability of our paints. They are also used in the processing of resin-binders in our water-based eggshell. We make ours from rapeseed oil, castor oil, and sugar-rich plant materials.

Sourced: Germany & Asia

Titanium Dioxide

Highly opaque, non-toxic white pigment universally used in paints and lacquers (and many other products including toothpaste). Refined from natural minerals (e.g. rutile) in an acid-free process, it nonetheless has a significant ecological impact.

Sourced: Europe & Asia

Benzisothiazolinone (BIT)

An organic compound containing sulphur and nitrogen. Used to preserve products e.g. in cleaning agents, paints and cosmetics.

Water-Based Eggshell & Gloss

Water

The primary diluent for most natural paints – and ours is no exception.

Sourced: Harz Mountains, Germany

Alkaline Solution

A solution of ammonia in water, used for making water-dilutable resins, waxes and oil soaps, so-called ammonia soaps.

Sourced: Europe

Bio-based Binder

A unique plant-based binder developed exclusively for AURO. Made from plant alcohol esters of pine and castor, with a small amount of fossil-derived monomers. It’s constantly being refined to become fully biogenic — a scientific breakthrough unmatched in the paint industry.

Sourced: Germany

Cellulose

A natural starch derived from wood pulp from sustainably managed European forests. Used as a thickener and emulsifier in our natural paints.

Sourced: Europe

Silicates

Mineral-based fillers like mica, clay, and quartz (silicon dioxide) that add body to the paint and strengthen the finish. Also help keep pigments in suspension.

Sourced: Germany

Silicic Acid

Finely dispersed silicic acids without crystaline (quartz) structure made from quarts sand and lime by flame hydrolysis. Used as matting filler or as filter agent and binder additive in silicic brines.

Sourced: Germany

Sodium Pyrithione

An organic compound containing sulphur and nitrogen, used as a mild preservative to extend the shelf life of our paints. Commonly used in cosmetics, cleaning products and paint.

Real Earth & Mineral Pigments

Colour begins with pigment. Rather than relying on a vast spectrum of modern synthetic colourants, we create our palette from a carefully selected range of earth and mineral pigments, with roots in the historic pigment palette. Their traditional equivalents include Flake White, Chrome Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, Red Lead, Red Ochre, Vermillion, Violet Carmine, Prussian Blue, Ultramarine, Verditer, Viridian and Lamp Black.

Used in different combinations and proportions, this carefully chosen palette of pigments gives our colours their distinctive tonal relationship and remarkable response to changing light.

How much paint do I need?

We have created this calculator to help you estimate the amount of paint you will need for your project. Please note that this is only an estimate, based on normal surfaces with two coats of paint.

Please check our practical painting advice - if you are painting onto a very absorbent surface, you may need more paint, and for best results, you may need to prime your surfaces.

If you end up with any leftover paint, get inspired with ways to use any excess paint - it's even compostable!

What are you painting?

Estimated
Painted Wall/Ceiling Area

Our natural matt emulsion is perfect for interior walls and ceilings.

0 litres

0 m2

This estimate is based on two coats of paint and the dimensions of your room, minus the space taken by average doors and windows.

For this area, we suggest would be adequate.

Estimated
Woodwork Area

Our water based eggshell or gloss is ideal for woodwork or metalwork.

0 litres

0 m2

This estimate is based on two coats of paint and the skirting and the doors/windows you told us about. 1 litre should cover 2-3 doors or 20m of skirting.

For this area, we suggest would be adequate.
