Egyptologist William John Bankes shipped a pair of black granite statues of the goddess Sekhmet from Karnak to Chatsworth for the 6th Duke, where they stood for many years beside Paxton’s conservatory. Their rich, dark granite – flecked with ochre – inspired this deep ochre-black, a colour with subtle warmth beneath its sculptural depth.

I very deliberately picked a soft colour palette, Swedish blues, greys, lavender, ivory, mauve and used paints with a chalky, almost distemper-like quality, as they have a restful effect. Edward Bulmer has a lovely range ; we used the Duck Egg in our sitting room.
