Interconnecting corridors were added to Chatsworth in the 19th century to separate family life from those working behind the scenes. As the art collection expanded, these passages became galleries. In 2010, Jacob van de Beugel clad the North Sketch Gallery in ceramic panels depicting the family’s DNA – a modern take on traditional portraiture. The glaze is a beautiful ochre that floods the space with warmth.
How to style: A deceptively simple hue using various pigments – somewhere between yellow, muted orange and stone. Its matt, biscuit-fired character works beautifully as a wall colour framed by a lighter off-white, but it is equally successful as a drenched scheme or as a contrasting trim.
Historic Colour Key: Late Georgian – George III. Regency inc. William IV. Victorian. Modern, Edward VII to Charles III.
Colours can vary between screens, we recommend trying a Sample Pot or A5 Colour Card before buying.
