We’re proud to be B Corp Certified, with a business model that prioritises people and planet before profit. After years of developing pioneering plant-based paints using gentle chemistry, we believe we’re helping lead a shift away from petrochemical-based products. Choosing natural paint is more than a colour decision, it’s a choice to make a positive difference. For us, true sustainability isn’t about what’s said, but what’s done: how paint is made, what it contains, and its impact on health, buildings, and the planet. That’s why we openly declare all our ingredients and encourage others to do the same. It's TIME for CHANGE We are Lifting the Lid on mainstream paint. We encounter a great deal of misunderstanding about paint. It is a complicated business making paint, but it is also one of the few supplies in my interior design work where so little is volunteered about how it is made and what the wider effects of that are. It matters a great deal to our clients, and we believe to humanity. How are we pioneers in plant-based paint making? Because we are innovating We’ve long known a climate crisis is approaching, and that action is essential. When Edward discovered how polluting conventional paint production can be, he sought full transparency and partnered with AURO, a German pioneer in natural paint making. Together, we’re committed to creating truly sustainable paints, using plant-based alternatives to plastics and harmful chemicals, while helping lead a simpler, more responsible paint revolution. Because we are protecting biodiversity We’re a small company with big ideas about making paint differently. Creating high-quality natural paint isn’t easy—it’s taken years of research to develop a durable, beautiful product that doesn’t cost the earth. Edward Bulmer Natural Paint was born from a commitment to protecting the environment and biodiversity, after discovering that many modern paints are essentially plastic, with microplastics making up a significant portion. Today, over 180,000 tonnes of microplastics from paint enter our waterways each year, far more than from cosmetics, raising serious concerns for both the environment and our health. Because we are paint for people and planet Our base white paint and natural pigments are made in Germany, with shipping currently our only carbon output. We aim to localise production with smaller UK and international facilities, reducing the need to transport paint long distances. Made with AURO, our paints use a fundamentally different process, no heavy industrial chemistry or imported synthetics, just responsibly sourced natural ingredients, creating a rich, opaque base for earth and mineral pigments to bring colour to life. Because we do not produce any toxic waste We’ve long known a climate crisis is approaching, and action is essential. For every litre of conventional paint, up to 30 litres of toxic waste can be produced, contributing to over 50,000 tonnes each year. Working with AURO, we take a different approach, creating positively, inspired by the natural world and using its resources mindfully. Our paints are made to be as gentle as possible, even compostable, and we’re always striving to go further through continuous innovation. Because we care Accountable sustainability is in our DNA. Our founder, Edward, is a dedicated environmental campaigner who has spent over a decade developing non-toxic, natural paints as a healthier alternative to conventional, petrochemical-based options. Our director, Emma, brings over 25 years’ experience in sustainable infrastructure, applying her passion for innovation and problem-solving to the world of paint. At the heart of it all is a shared belief: protecting the planet for future generations. Greenwashing Beware! As we move towards a carbon-free future and take responsibility for protecting biodiversity, ‘greenwashing’ has become widespread, especially in the paint industry. Terms like ‘eco-friendly’, ‘sustainable’, and ‘low VOC’ are used more than ever, yet in many cases, little has truly changed beyond the messaging. We believe in transparency, always ask for a full declaration of ingredients before buying. Any reputable company should clearly share what’s in their paint and where it comes from Greenwashing - is it a big problem? Words by Edward Bulmer Greenwashing - is it a big problem? When choosing paint, what’s inside the tin isn’t always as clear as it seems. Many products claim to be ‘eco-friendly’ or ‘low VOC’, but a closer look often tells a different story. In an industry where greenwashing is common, honest, transparent information is essential—something we’ve always prioritised. Here, our founder Edward Bulmer explores just how widespread greenwashing is in the paint industry and what it really means in practice.
