In 2023, Edward Bulmer Natural Paint was selected as one of twelve emerging British luxury businesses to join Walpole’s Brands of Tomorrow programme, recognising our commitment to craftsmanship, innovation and a more responsible approach to the paint industry. It was a proud moment for our team and an opportunity to share our vision for natural paint alongside an inspiring group of independent British brands. Class of 2023 - Walpole British Luxury Awards 2023/2024 What is Walpole’s Brands of Tomorrow programme? Walpole is the industry body for the British luxury sector, bringing together businesses across design, fashion, beauty, hospitality and craftsmanship. Its annual Brands of Tomorrow programme supports a select group of emerging businesses through mentoring, workshops and guidance from experienced industry leaders. The 2023 cohort brought together twelve brands with distinctive approaches to their craft, united by an appreciation for quality, creativity and the importance of building businesses with a clear sense of purpose. A different approach to British luxury For Edward Bulmer Natural Paint, luxury has always been about more than appearance. As an interior designer and architectural historian, Edward understands the extraordinary effect colour can have on a space. But he also believes that beautiful interiors should be created with consideration for the materials we use and their wider impact. Our natural paints combine a carefully developed palette of colours with plant-based binders and earth and mineral pigments, offering an alternative to conventional plastic-based formulations. It’s an approach rooted in both traditional craftsmanship and a determination to make the paint industry more transparent about what goes into its products. As Edward puts it: “Our job as designers is to create ‘paradise’, you might say – but without responsibility it risks being a ‘fool’s paradise’.” Our natural paint tins The earth and mineral pigments that colour our paints Walls painted in Freudian Celebrating the 2023 cohort We were delighted to share the experience with eleven other businesses working across British design, fashion, beauty and lifestyle. Our fellow Brands of Tomorrow included AKT, Navy Grey, Holmes Bespoke, Goldfinger, Difference Coffee, Roxanne First, Monpure, Anglo-Italian, Baz & Co, Maison Margaux and Makers Cabinet. From thoughtfully made furniture and textiles to jewellery, skincare and everyday objects, each brought its own perspective to the meaning of contemporary British luxury. The programme offered a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from established industry figures and build relationships with other founders who care deeply about the quality and purpose of what they create. Looking ahead Being recognised as a Walpole Brand of Tomorrow was an important milestone in our journey, but our ambition remains unchanged: to create beautiful, high-performing natural paints while encouraging greater honesty about the ingredients used in decorating our homes. We believe that colour, craftsmanship and environmental responsibility should go hand in hand, and we’re proud to be part of a wider community of British businesses working to put those values into practice.
