The white edit: the quiet depth of our natural whites

As summer unfolds and Wimbledon returns for another year, there’s something quietly powerful about the colour white taking centre stage, both in homes and on the courts.

For interior designers and homeowners, white has long been a go-to for painting walls. But as anyone who’s stood in front of a wall of swatches knows, not all whites are created equal. Our paints are renowned for their natural ingredients and they are added to our whites to create an enticing palette of varying tones. Take Milk White, a creamy, mellow tone that brings warmth without yellowing, Fair White, a soft, clean white that pairs beautifully with natural light and traditional interiors or Rose Tinted White, that has hints of red oxide and vermillion, creating a white with the subtlest hint of pink.

Each shade is crafted with plant-based ingredients and natural pigments, giving depth and character that synthetic paints can’t recreate. Every colour tells a different story—and choosing the right one for your space is as much about emotion as it is about aesthetics.

Milk White looks warm and welcoming in both this kitchen by Beauvamp, paired with Fawn on the woodwork, and in Edward’s study where he has drenched the room from top to toe.

This July it’s 3 for £10 on all of our winning white sample pots*.

Just add three samples to your basket and the discount will e applied at checkout.

Stylist Amy Bannerman met with our colour consultants to redecorate the master bedroom in her coastal home. The wall colour decided on was Portland. The history is in the name, a colour linked to Portland Stone, it uses earth and ore pigments to create a grown up neutral. Paired here with Clove on the mantelpiece and Invisible Green on the door for some added fun.

Rose Tinted White’s subtlest hint of pink lends a gentle glow at sunrise and sunset, and is used across all rooms in the house. It is very popular in bedrooms and bathrooms and offers warmth to an East facing room. Illustrated below is how great it can look in a kitchen and sitting room.

At last we found the perfect off white for our bedroom which we both love. Neither too pink nor too white Rose Tinted White goes perfectly with the rest of our decor. The paint was lovely, went on so easily with only two coats

Painting your entire home in white might seem like a dream, or maybe too daunting. But in truth, it’s an expressive, thoughtful decision. Choosing white throughout allows each room to breathe, while offering a cohesive experience when moving from space to space. The images below illustrate how calming and seamless it can make a home feel.

White has always been a classic choice, but when you root it in natural materials and pigments, it becomes much more than just a background colour, our natural whites breathe. They evolve with light, age with grace, and create spaces that feel open, calm, and connected to the earth. For help with which white is right for you, get in touch with our colour consultants who will be happy to help.

So as the grass courts are freshly mown and players step out in their traditional whites, why not take inspiration from the elegance of Wimbledon itself? Surround yourself with the calm of natural white walls — soft, sunlit, and quietly refined. Whether you’re tuning in for the thrill of the match or simply soaking up the summer atmosphere, there’s no better backdrop than a peaceful, white-washed space.

How much paint do I need?

We have created this calculator to help you estimate the amount of paint you will need for your project. Please note that this is only an estimate, based on normal surfaces with two coats of paint.

Please check our practical painting advice - if you are painting onto a very absorbent surface, you may need more paint, and for best results, you may need to prime your surfaces.

If you end up with any leftover paint, get inspired with ways to use any excess paint - it's even compostable!

What are you painting?

Estimated
Painted Wall/Ceiling Area

Our natural matt emulsion is perfect for interior walls and ceilings.

0 litres

0 m2

This estimate is based on two coats of paint and the dimensions of your room, minus the space taken by average doors and windows.

For this area, we suggest would be adequate.

Estimated
Woodwork Area

Our water based eggshell or gloss is ideal for woodwork or metalwork.

0 litres

0 m2

This estimate is based on two coats of paint and the skirting and the doors/windows you told us about. 1 litre should cover 2-3 doors or 20m of skirting.

For this area, we suggest would be adequate.
