As you are deciding on the beautiful natural paint colours for your walls, perhaps you’d like to consider a natural alternative to bedding to complete your healthy home transformation? Looking for Sustainable Design Innovators? Introducing Naturalmat, the home of sustainable and organic mattresses, bedding and much more! As you know at Edward Bulmer Natural Paint we love championing sustainable design and introducing you to and working alongside likeminded authentic and eco brands. In case you haven’t yet discovered this award winning brand (the Queen’s Award for sustainable development!) and its products, we thought we’d share their story and we were delighted to speak to founder, Mark Tremlett, from their Devon HQ. Naturalmat started thinking about mattresses back in 1999, taking a different approach to the rest of the trade. The majority of mattresses were made using man-made synthetic materials that were neither biodegradable nor from a sustainable source. What’s more, they provided questionable sleep and supportive benefits to the mattress. So Naturalmat came up with a solution! They experimented with natural fibres finding them to be the best material for mattress-making and with the added bonus of not having to use any chemical additives whatsoever. Bedroom with Naturalmat Bed, Mattress and Linen and our 'Bleu Turc' on the walls All the ingredients that go into a Naturalmat product are 100% natural and from a sustainable resource that is harvested according to Fair Trade principles. Where possible, they buy from local sources and always make an effort to keep their carbon footprint as low as possible. At the end of their life, all Naturalmat materials are 100% biodegradable, so they will return to nature as nature intended. All their mattresses are made by hand in Topsham, on the banks of the River Exe, Devon. They believe that people, not machines, make a superior, longer-lasting product. They have a team of craftspeople that ensure every stitch, every fibre, every tufting button and every cover is painstakingly created, teased and checked. On top of this all of their packaging is environmentally friendly and they are continually innovating their range and improving products, remaining true to their guiding principles. Mark Tremlett, Founder of Naturalmat We spoke to Naturalmat’s founder Mark Tremlett to find out a little bit more.. What moment are you most proud of or do you hold most dearly in your Naturalmat journey ? I suppose winning The Queens Award for Sustainable Development last April was a stand out moment. We really did not expect to get recognised, so it was a very bright moment in very dark times. What drives and inspires you? The simple lofty desire to make the most comfortable, best looking and sustainable beds and mattresses that money can buy. Tell us a surprising fact about Naturalmat? I made all the early mattresses on my old table tennis table in a draughty part of the old boatyard. The company has demonstrated a solid sustainable ethic throughout the business. It has won several local environmental awards, demonstrates a high level of engagement with the supply chain.. while a relatively small player in the bed and mattress industry, the company has created a product and business model that goes against the grain of the industry. Naturalmat is awarded due to outstanding sustainability leadership and clear sustainability ethos The Queen's Award Judging Panel, 21st April 2020 The materials used for aa Naturalmat mattress A mattress being made in their factory on the River Exe If you could put a bed anywhere in the world and fall asleep there – where would it be? For me it’s either mountains or sea. On balance let’s go Sea, so on the beach at Hooken Cove, near Branscombe, Devon, then I can leap out of bed and swim around Beer Head in the morning. What does good design mean to you? Clean, simple, un-fussy and well engineered. Favourite book or podcast to share. Any Hemingway, apart from Death in The Afternoon, which is too heavy going.
