Pairing natural colours and whites: tips for timeless British interiors. Part two

Welcome to the second part of the blog on pairing our whites with colours. This blog will look at the best way to match our whites with yellows, browns, reds and greys. With 20 beautiful and varied whites to choose from, it’s clear that all whites are not the same.

The subtle amount of pigments added to our whites dramatically alters how they behave in a space. The combination of the pigment, the colour they are paired with and the light in the room are all things to consider when picking a white for your walls, ceiling or woodwork.

When placed alongside bolder colours, natural whites can soften the contrast or enhance the surrounding tones, depending on their own warmth or coolness.

To achieve the look you want, have a look at some pairings that our founder, Edward has put together to help with your decision making.

YELLOWS

Naples Yellow, a yellow that can accurately be called an eruption of colour is paired here with Whiting, a  versatile off white shade. It both complements lighter colour schemes and anchors stronger hues, as shown here with these dramatic stripes.

One of our newer whites is Water Glass, a perfect tone to sit alongside yellows. It is a cooling white that will calm stronger tones that are laden with pigments.

Once considered an underdog in the world of colour, brown is finally having its well-deserved moment in the spotlight. The  beauty of Edward’s earthy natural browns will convert any remaining sceptics.

Mummy is warm and inviting and pairs perfectly with another maternal colour, Milk White, as shown here. Mummy is very popular in bathrooms and on panelling and also pairs well with White Lead.

REDS

Spanish White contains natural chalk, giving it a slightly yellow tone that lends warmth to this very popular white. It’s warmth and hint of yellow makes it the perfect companion to our strong and full bodied reds, illustrated perfectly here when it is paired with Brick Red. Spanish White is regularly chosen for ceilings due to it’s versatile nature.

GREYS

Explore Flaxen Grey

When pairing whites with greys when painting you can creates a timeless, elegant look.  This will suits both modern and traditional spaces. To keep the palette cohesive, choose warm greys with creamy whites, such as Fair White and French Grey or cool greys with crisp, bright whites, as illustrated here with Flaxen Grey and Silver White.  This subtle contrast adds depth without overwhelming the space, making it feel both calm and sophisticated.

Refer to our first blog on pairing colours and whites to explore which whites go with pinks, greens, blues and new neutrals.

All our colours are available in sample pot sizes and we recommend that you try a sample pot before ordering as colours can look different on a screen. With their beautiful natural ingredients we also suggest you look at the sample in all different lights as the pigments vary depending on the light and time of day.

We have wonderfully knowledgable colour consultants that are available remotely or in person to help you make the colour decisions for your home, whether it’s just one room or a whole house, they are ready to help.

How much paint do I need?

We have created this calculator to help you estimate the amount of paint you will need for your project. Please note that this is only an estimate, based on normal surfaces with two coats of paint.

Please check our practical painting advice - if you are painting onto a very absorbent surface, you may need more paint, and for best results, you may need to prime your surfaces.

If you end up with any leftover paint, get inspired with ways to use any excess paint - it's even compostable!

What are you painting?

Estimated
Painted Wall/Ceiling Area

Our natural matt emulsion is perfect for interior walls and ceilings.

0 litres

0 m2

This estimate is based on two coats of paint and the dimensions of your room, minus the space taken by average doors and windows.

For this area, we suggest would be adequate.

Estimated
Woodwork Area

Our water based eggshell or gloss is ideal for woodwork or metalwork.

0 litres

0 m2

This estimate is based on two coats of paint and the skirting and the doors/windows you told us about. 1 litre should cover 2-3 doors or 20m of skirting.

For this area, we suggest would be adequate.
