Colour Blocking

Childrens bedroom decorated in 'Hector' and 'George' From Edward Bulmer Natural Paints Nursey Collection. Photography by RoomyTown
Wall colour and painted chair, both in 'George'

Decorating in blocks of colours is a simple and effective way of making a bold statement without too much fuss! The above uses two of our much loved colours ‘Hector’ and ‘George’. It’s usually a technique that involves choosing two contrasting colours and painting a large area of each in a similar pattern side by side. It’s great if you are stuck between two colours and can’t decide (we’ve all been there). You can go bright or monochrome, but the effect is always triumphant! The effect can be as dramatic as you choose and the way you colour block can be as punchy or as soft as you feel comfortable. Playing with lines, diagonal and vertical, maybe using block colours around a window frame  or like the photo above, simply splitting the room into two beautifully hued halves.

Our paints are are wipeable but not water-resistant due to the fact they contain no plastics, just beautiful, breathable paint!

Softly does it, bedrooms painted in calming neutrals

Children's bedroom in 'Cuisse de Nymphe Emue 60%', design by Laura Fantacci
Children's bedroom in 'Cuisse de Nymphe Emue 60%', design by Laura Fantacci

Sometimes you just want a calm and safe haven, ‘Cuisse de Nymphe Emue’ is the prefect pink for a rosy children’s bedroom, above it is paired with a variety of soft and comforting textiles. If you have a lot of other component’s to the room or have a smaller space, using one colour and pairing it with a feature wall or wall hangings is a great idea. Cuisse de Nymphe has got the perfect amount of umber and it refrains from being too ‘girly’ we all love pink here at Edward Bulmer Natural Paints and ‘Cuisse de Nymphe Emue‘ is always a front runner, it shares its name with a beautiful smelling garden rose too!

Cuisse comes in shades 60%, 40% and 20% if you’re looking for something a little lighter, read more about our shades here.

Perfect panelling

Panelling in 'George', design by Emma Diaz
Panelling in 'Evie'

Panelling is such a lovely feature in a room and can really change the final outcome in some simple steps. Painting your wooden panelling will give a nice contrast to the above wall colour and similar to colour blocking, allows you to indulge in not one colours but two! Panelling was originally done to keep the room insulated but was soon recognised as a decorative feature and grew in popularity. The linear pattern can make walls appear longer if you have a low ceiling and they are easy to paint with little fuss. The above panelling is painted in ‘Evie’ which is a slightly lighter version of our ‘Invisible Green’ is a lively green which will brighten any room and again a favourite from the Nursery Collection, ‘George’.

Our 12 Nursery collection colours aren’t just for the nursery, they look great worked into any space and provide a light and tonal feel, shop all of our colours here, there are over 100 to choose from

Seeing stripes

Stripes to stop you in your tracks! ‘Quirky without being babyish’ was Kitty Patterson’s brief for her son’s nursery bedroom and hence the idea for these playful stripes was born! A genius DIY ‘hack’, saving money on expensive wallpaper and once the dimensions are set and marked out, even easier than hanging wallpaper! The colours work together brilliantly and tonally; ‘Duck Egg’ in super soft contrast to the more vibrant ‘Verdigris’. We think this is definitely a winning transformation idea for all children’s rooms,  we adore this style.

How much paint do I need?

We have created this calculator to help you estimate the amount of paint you will need for your project. Please note that this is only an estimate, based on normal surfaces with two coats of paint.

Please check our practical painting advice - if you are painting onto a very absorbent surface, you may need more paint, and for best results, you may need to prime your surfaces.

If you end up with any leftover paint, get inspired with ways to use any excess paint - it's even compostable!

What are you painting?
