How to Use Samples

Get the most out of your samples and move closer to your perfect colour scheme with our simple tips.

Explore more in this section

1. Pick a colour

Explore our inspiration page and browse by colour, architectural style or room. For tailored advice, book a virtual or in-person session with one of our expert colour consultants.

2. Choose a Sample Type

Choose between our 60ml pot of matt emulsion for the full natural paint experience, or A5 colour swatches painted with our emulsion for infinitely movable samples.

3. Using Sample Pots

Give your pot a quick stir and paint two coats – let the first coat dry then reapply – straight onto your walls or multiple sheets of paper. Position the sheets in various places in your room to get the best sense of how your chosen colours will look in different light throughout the day and evening.

4. Using A5 Colour Swatches

A5 swatches are perfect for moving from wall to wall and room to room, without having to get out a brush. They aren’t sticky, so they’re infinitely movable. Simply use paper tape to affix to your walls or prop against fabrics and furnishings to help curate your perfect palette. Move the swatches around the room to get an idea of how your chosen colours will look under natural and artificial lights at different times of the day.

5. After You’ve Used Your Samples

The packaging and contents of our sample pots are either reusable, recyclable or compostable.

Why not share leftover sample paint with family or friends. For unwanted leftover paint, either let dry in the pot or pour out onto a piece of cardboard. Our emulsion can be composted when dry or disposed of in household waste. Once clean and dry either reuse the handy glass jar and lid, or recycle via your kerbside household recycling.

We’re all for reusing, so once you’ve chosen your colour scheme and finished with your swatches, share them with someone you think will love our colours and paint. Our swatches are made from plant-based emulsion and FSC certified paper and can be recycled in your household recycling.

How much paint do I need?

We have created this calculator to help you estimate the amount of paint you will need for your project. Please note that this is only an estimate, based on normal surfaces with two coats of paint.

Please check our practical painting advice - if you are painting onto a very absorbent surface, you may need more paint, and for best results, you may need to prime your surfaces.

If you end up with any leftover paint, get inspired with ways to use any excess paint - it's even compostable!

What are you painting?

Estimated
Painted Wall/Ceiling Area

Our natural matt emulsion is perfect for interior walls and ceilings.

0 litres

0 m2

This estimate is based on the dimensions of your room, minus the space taken by average doors and windows.

For this area, we suggest would be adequate.

Estimated
Woodwork Area

Our water based eggshell or gloss is ideal for woodwork or metalwork.

0 litres

0 m2

This estimate is based on skirting and the doors/windows you tell us about. 1 litre should cover 2-3 doors or 20m of skirting.

For this area, we suggest would be adequate.
