Interior Design in a Tin

Unlike any other paint brand our natural paints are designed, created and ‘homemade’ by leading interior designer, architectural historian and ‘colour man’, Edward Bulmer. Like a top chef, Edward is passionate about every colour we produce, how it has been made and the raw materials we use to make it.  It not only matters that this paint colour will look beautiful in your home, for Edward, our paint must not cost the earth.

Edward has received the first House & Garden Responsible Designer of the year award and is leading the charge to make the design industry more sustainable. A lot of research and gentle chemistry has gone into perfecting these recipes over the years and we are proud to offer you ‘paint made just the way it should be’ with unrivalled pigment rich colours and superior breathable coverage.

When you decide to buy our paints you are getting more than a beautiful colour and quality finish, you are getting passion and knowledge from one of the UK’s leading interior designers. Edward has been in the House & Garden Top 100  since it began.  He is without doubt the ‘go to’ interior designer if you have a historic home or building project. Although he got side tracked with his campaign to clean up the paint industry which led to the creation of Edward Bulmer Natural Paint, he remains in demand for that rare combination of historical knowledge, creativity and practicality that he brings to major restoration projects in the nation’s most important buildings and family homes.

Edward has spent the last 30 years working in some of Britain’s finest buildings. He is a leading interior designer, architectural historian and ‘colourman’, renowned for restoring our heritage buildings, bringing his expert knowledge to conservation and his design flair to the creation of new spaces for modern living.

The Colourful Past: Edward Bulmer and the English Country House

Published by Rizzoli with photographs by Paul Whitbread

Edward has written and published his first book on his lifetime of working in interior design. In his first book, Edward takes readers on in-depth tours of his work in some of Britain’s grandest homes, including Althorp, Goodwood, Pitshill House, and Broughton Hall, along with his work for private clients, highlighting his own stunning home, a Queen Anne manor house built in 1700. Edward and his family have spent the last twenty years turning this country farmhouse into a comfortable, practical home–with a working organic farm–that perfectly accommodates the demands of contemporary living. It has become a laboratory for his design practice and is also the base for his paint company.

As an Interior designer Edward breathes new life into centuries-old houses with a sympathy that is rooted in a deep understanding of the past, transforming them into comfortable homes designed for modern living. Edward is part of a new generation of designers working on historical houses with an eye on designs that appeal to contemporary families and active lifestyles while at the same time respecting the classical traditions that have made the British country house style so popular today.

The Colourman

Edward is a master in both the art and science of colour, an expert with a mission to revive the world of natural colour. He is an accomplished artist himself and so he understands pigment and colour and how colours work in a room.  He has designed the Edward Bulmer Natural paint range using just 12 natural earth and mineral pigments used by artists for centuries.  He also has that technical know-how and practical experience to translate historic colour references into paint shades perfectly suitable for fashionable, modern living. No other paint company has a recognised designer at the helm.  Edward is a colour expert with exquisite taste and all our colours are designed, made and mixed by him for you.

Imagine if you could invite one of the country’s leading interior designers into your home to advise you on colour choices and types of paint for period or modern interiors. That is precisely the experience you will get from Edward Bulmer Natural Paint with a colour collection of unified tonal palettes reflecting years of experience which has also been passed onto our growing team of colour consultants .

Chequers
Pomona at Court of Noke

I have been an interior designer for over 30 years, combining colour and tonality in my designs. I used to mix my own colours using traditional materials because I could never fine the right colour and I saw just how superior these paints were to dull, modern equivalents. So I offer you what I want for my own projects- beautiful colour and proven performance, backed up by ecological principles. I use only natural pigments and plant-based ingredients and we tell you exactly what our paint is made from so you can rest assured it is good for you, your home and our planet. We have spent years developing the perfect natural paint, so join us at Edward Bulmer Natural Paint and colour with a conscience - why compromise?

How much paint do I need?

We have created this calculator to help you estimate the amount of paint you will need for your project. Please note that this is only an estimate, based on normal surfaces with two coats of paint.

Please check our practical painting advice - if you are painting onto a very absorbent surface, you may need more paint, and for best results, you may need to prime your surfaces.

If you end up with any leftover paint, get inspired with ways to use any excess paint - it's even compostable!

What are you painting?
