IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING WATER BASED EGGSHELL AND GLOSS PAINT ON WOODWORK THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN PAINTED IN KITCHENS OR OTHER AREAS WHERE GREASE MIGHT HAVE ACCUMULATED

So this applies to all water based eggshell paint not just Edward Bulmer Natural Paint.  It is particularly relevant to kitchen cupboards where the accumulation of grease on the surface of cupboards and drawers is unavoidable.

  1. THOROUGHLY degrease all surfaces. Use spray degreaser and follow manufacturer instructions.  Wipe clean and dry thoroughly after degreasing completed.

  2. Sand well with sander (preferably) or sandpaper using P80 Grit.

  3. Hoover off the dust and wipe with tack cloth.

  4. Sand again with P12 Grit.

  5. Remove dust and wipe with tack cloth again.

  6. Apply eggshell primer.

  7. Fill any cracks and then sand to create even surface.

  8. Spot paint the filled areas with top coat.

  9. Apply first top coat and leave to dry overnight. Do not expect to sand and recoat in a day as dust will stick to surface and finish will not have hardened sufficiently.

  10. Sand using P240.

  11. Apply second top coat and leave to dry. Water based paints will take 2 weeks to cure properly but the surface is sufficiently dry for usage after 24 hours.

TIPS

  1. For best results remove cupboard and repaint in a workshop to avoid excess dust sticking on newly prepared surfaces and for ease of sanding.

  2. Use suitable undercoat before priming on new wood to cover knots.

How much paint do I need?

We have created this calculator to help you estimate the amount of paint you will need for your project. Please note that this is only an estimate, based on normal surfaces with two coats of paint.

Please check our practical painting advice - if you are painting onto a very absorbent surface, you may need more paint, and for best results, you may need to prime your surfaces.

If you end up with any leftover paint, get inspired with ways to use any excess paint - it's even compostable!

What are you painting?

Estimated
Painted Wall/Ceiling Area

Our natural matt emulsion is perfect for interior walls and ceilings.

0 litres

0 m2

This estimate is based on the dimensions of your room, minus the space taken by average doors and windows.

For this area, we suggest would be adequate.

Estimated
Woodwork Area

Our water based eggshell or gloss is ideal for woodwork or metalwork.

0 litres

0 m2

This estimate is based on skirting and the doors/windows you tell us about. 1 litre should cover 2-3 doors or 20m of skirting.

For this area, we suggest would be adequate.
