Top tips for Hay
As his 50th birthday dawned, Peter Dunne had a life-changing conversation with a friend and realised that, while he may not have invented the internet or found a cure for cancer, he had nonetheless fathered three remarkable and beautiful children. Inspired by that fact, he set out to leave a trail of metaphorical breadcrumbs for them, so that if they ever needed to know what their father might have had to say on a particular subject, it would be set down for them. The result is a book of letters from a father to his children, and though the stories are firmly set in a place and time, the themes and the tone are universal and timeless. From Compromise to Compassion, from Democracy to Sacrifice, THE 50 THINGS explores the social mores and morality of our time and tries to answer the eternal questions that line the path to peace of mind. Peter is talking to Hay at 4pm on Thursday, 1st June.
"This book is that rare thing: a non-preachy and super-helpful guide. Every page made me smile and some laugh aloud". Eoin Colfer, bestselling author of Artemis Fowl.
You cannot visit Hay without visiting Shepherds, either the caravan on site or the parlour in town. Check out Michael Morpurgo’s smile as he clutches his Shepherds ice cream at the Hay Festival! Using sheep’s milk has enabled Shepherds to develop a unique style of ice cream-making. The richness of the milk enables them to make ice cream without adding extra fats like cream, eggs or butter. Sheep’s milk ice cream has a smooth and creamy texture and less than 7% fat. Sheeps milk is naturally homogenised and so it is easier to digest and the deliciously light base lets even the most delicate of flavours shine through. The ice cream is made daily and consumed within days so it is utterly fresh and the flavours change depending on the seasons and what is available.
Just to make your mouth water…they always have vanilla, toffee and fudge, choc mint chip, banana toffee crunch and chocolate on offer plus famous fruit flavours using local fruit like raspberry, blackcurrent, damson and strawberry. Sometimes ginger, coconut, pistachio, coffee and rum & raisin are substituted, even cardoman & lavender, chocolate & chilli, liquorice, rhubarb crumble, hazelnut and maron glacee. We love their water ices like mango & passionfruit and lemon, even cider apple to pear!
Peter Florence has recommended going to see Michael Sheen which we fear is sold out though look out for returns on the day. There is so much to see best to book online and make the most of this 30th Anniversary gathering at Hay. We look forward to seeing you there.
